People driving on the Memorial Shoreway through downtown Cleveland cannot help but be impressed when they pass a working utility scale wind turbine on the north side of the freeway. It’s part of the Great Lakes Science Center and a great addition to its mission of making science exciting. Windpower Engineering editor Paul Dvorak learns more about the machine in this interview with Facilities Manager Jeff Gadd.

Cleveland's Great Lakes Science Center installed a 225 kW Vestas V27 wind turbine in 2006 on the city's harbor front between the Cleveland Brown's football stadium and the science museum. The V27 is no longer manufactured and this unit was bought used and then reconditioned. The Science Center has done an excellent job of installing the turbine to maximize its aesthetic appearance and the unit provides a dramatic visual attraction on the city's harbor front skyline. (Cleveland fronts onto the south shore of Lake Erie.) Cleveland's urban wind turbine joins a limited number of such wind turbines in the Anglophone world: Wellington New Zealand's V27 overlooking Wellington Harbor, Toronto's WindShare turbine on Lake Ontario, and the Brotherhood of Electrical Workers' Fuhrländer turbine in Bos...

The windy rainy weather outsmarted most umbrellas this morning and rendered them damaged and clinging to life.

This particular wind turbine located along the I-480 at Pearl Road. Old Brooklyn, Ohio is pictured to the left (north) and Parma, Ohio is pictured to the right (south).

This live video show later released in 1977 on the album “Live at Last” a full-length live performance at the Cleveland Music Hall, Cleveland, Ohio on the 1976 Depression Tour, and sees Midler, her backing group The Staggering Harlettes and her band Betsy and the Blowboys covering material from her three first albums as well as The Supremes' "Up the Ladder to the Roof", Neil Young's "Birds", Ringo Starr's "Oh My My", the mock lounge act The Vicky Eydie Show doing a "global revue" and the song cycle The Story of Nanette. The show also captures Midler's rapport with - or loving heckling of - the Cleveland audience, a monologue about fried eggs and a part that since has become a staple of her live performances: the raunchy Sophie Tucker jokes. "La Mer" L.109, (The Sea), is an orchestral composition by Claude Debussy. It was started in 1903 in France and completed in 1905 on the English Channel coast in Eastbourne. The premiere was given by the Lamoureux Orchestra under the direction of Camille Chevillard on 15 October 1905 in Paris. "La Mer" is a composition of huge suggestion and subtlety in its rich depiction of the ocean, which combines unusual orchestration with daring impressionistic harmonies. The work has proven very influential, and its use of sensuous tonal colours and its orchestration methods have influenced many later film scores. While the structure of the work places it outside of both absolute music and programme music as those terms were understood in the early 20th century, it obviously uses descriptive devices ...
